Ellie's birthday present: Bella!

Hey everybody!

You've seen the party, now check out the present!
When I asked Ellie months ago what she wanted for her birthday, she answered as if she had rehearsed it over and over in that almost-5-yr-old brain of hers: A puppy JUST MY SIZE that will stay JUST MY SIZE.

Well, now... that's very specific.

Also, she said it in such a way that she wasn't going to take "no" for an answer.

Fast forward to last Tuesday. After finding the perfect puppy online, calling for details, and completing the transaction, Meredith and Jenessa thought I should play a little trick on Ellie. If you know me at all, I'm NOT a liar... I CAN'T keep things from people, and all things related make me super uncomfortable. Which is why when I tried to tell Ellie that we weren't going to get a puppy this year, I couldn't even do it right. Instead, it went more like this:

Me: (as we're driving to meet the puppy for the very first time) Ellie, what would you say if I wasn't able to get you a puppy for your birthday?

See! I couldn't even do it! I had to form it as a question.

Ellie: Why not?

Me: Well, somebody already bought that perfect puppy online (of course, I meant me.)

Ellie: Well, you know... we could go to Petland and get one, or some other place.

Me: (And here's where I get gutsy) I just don't know if it's going to happen.

Then, attempting to set up the reveal and make her think I am changing the subject, I say:
We need to take your picture in a few minutes.

Ellie: Okay. (obviously not a happy camper)

We arrive...

Me: Okay, let's take some pictures!

Ellie: Can I be sad in these?

OMG!!!! THIS BROKE MY HEART!!! I ALMOST SPILLED IT RIGHT THEN AND THERE!!

(Door opens, out comes Bella. Ellie is still oblivious. At least I got her to smile a little)

Then, she sees her!

Love ensues...

After lots of playing, Bella was pooped.

BTW, Bella was already named, but that was perfect because half of Ellie's dolls are named Bella - it's one of her favorites. And her appreciation for the Twilight series helped in keeping it that. Thanks for all those who suggested names (one of you even suggested Bella. I gave her the option to change it and presented your cases. But in the end, Bella was the winner.)

What a fun afternoon that was!

Talk to you soon,
Dale
