Collage Photoshop Action for Photographers

Hey everybody!

Today's post is for photographers. Over the past week I've been discussing time saving tips in my Photo Tips o' the Day. Today's tip is about using Photoshop actions to save mega time. I use this action almost daily on the blog, so I wanted to make it available to photographers so they can save time in their workflow.

The action is a collage action that combines two vertical images by putting them side by side and sizing them to 1600px wide - that's great for blogs or websites!

Super Sweet Smith Family Portraits

Hey everybody!

I've got another gorgeous family to share with you today. Bradley and Meridith are no strangers to the Benfield Blog. After shooting their wedding in Joplin, we become best friends with them, and later photographed the "day after session" in Paris (well, we actually photographed them in Versailles, but we spent a week with them in Paris). Now, fast forward a few years and they have an addition to their family: Sloane! She's a total sweetie, and seeing how happy she makes Bradley and Meridith just melts me. One their recent visit to Joplin we did a quick portrait session. Have a look at a couple favorites:

What I Did Today (super cute family alert!)

Hey everybody!

I don't advertise/market myself as a family photographer. In fact, I only shoot two handfuls of families every year. But I tell you this: I ADORE my families! Today I got to meet a new family, and I look forward to adding them to my list of regulars: they are super sweet and their daughter is so precious! I'll have more from this session coming up, but for now check out a quick teaser:

Signe's Vista West Ranch Wedding Album Design

Hey everybody!

It's been awhile since I've shown wedding albums on this bad boy. There's really no way better to bring back album design to the blog than through the super fabulous wedding of Signe and Chad at Vista West Ranch. There are three main aspects that make up not only this wedding album, and all wedding albums by Benfield Photography: gorgeous portraits, amazing details, and special moments. You'll see all three in Signe's wedding album - just click "start" and enjoy!

Sunday Superthoughts: What Is A Weed, or How We Wrongly Label People

Hey everybody!

We're sticking with Emerson this week - I love this quote: "What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have never been discovered."

When I was in college I started my teacher education program, and actually got to hear my 6th grade teacher give a lecture about a kid who changed her life. She said the first day of school she welcomed all her kids into her class with hugs. One kid, however, she immediately wrote off because he had long hair, wasn't dressed like the other kids, and he smelled like cigarette smoke. Yes, a 6th grader smelled like smoke. She didn't put forth much effort with the student until after the first homework assignment, when the kid earned the only perfect score in the class. He went on to be a straight A student with no behavior problems.

I went up to my former teacher after her lecture, and I kid you not, she cried. I had never heard the story, and had no idea of the situation she described, but I was touched when she confirmed it: the student that changed her life was me. My mom, who drove me to school in the 6th grade, smoked. All my clothes smelled like it. My hair was long - you probably already knew that I rocked the mullet. And my family couldn't afford a lot of the same things as other kids, but we were okay with that.

Too quickly, we judge others without looking deeper. Our preconceived notions about what people should look like, should act like, should talk like, should be like are crippling us from being the people we should be.

So, this isn't necessarily the uplifting quote I normally put up for a Sunday Superthought, but it was at the forefront of my thoughts and I wanted to share it with you in case you run into a 12-year-old who can't really help where he came from... that you might just give him the benefit of the doubt.

Our Looney Little Bridesmaid...

Hey everybody!

I have a totally silly blog post for you today. I've never done a blog post about a bridesmaid before, but this is no ordinary bridesmaid. This is Meredith Looney. She's a funny and silly bridesmaid, and we love it when she's in the wedding party!

I first met her at Marion's wedding years ago. She entertained me even then...

Recently, she was a bridesmaid at Signe's wedding and totally made mine and Mere's night with her antics... Enjoy!

Of course she even caught the bouquet...

Princess Lasertron for Unique Bridal Bouquet: Vendor Spotlight

Hey everybody!

I haven't done a vendor spotlight in awhile. There are so many great vendors both locally and nationally that I love working with. One of the coolest vendors who offers a rad and unique bridal bouquets and bridesmaid bouquets is Princess Lasertron. I've mentioned her once on the blog a long time ago, but just in passing. Anyway, she creates amazing bouquets from felt and fabric and buttons that you can keep long after your wedding - I think that's pretty cool! Here's her website:
http://princesslasertron.com/ She even has a shop on there if you don't know exactly what you want!

Here's some of her handiwork from a Benfield Photography wedding:

Abby loved hers so much she carried it throughout her first dance and her entire portrait session!

She also does unique boutonnieres for the boys:

If you're looking for a cool and unique bridal bouquet for your wedding, give Princess Lasertron a shout!

Art Feeds Wins a Do Something Award

Hey everybody!

Our dear friend Meg Bourne, founder of Art Feeds has won a Do Something Award! Though she didn't win the "grand prize" of 100,000 dollars from VH1, she did recieve the silver shoe trophy and 10,000 dollars to help Art Feeds reach every child in the Joplin school district. What an amazing goal for the non-profit that I'm honored to be close to!

Last night, the Do Something awards aired on VH1, and Mere and I both cried on seeing Meg's segment. I've embeded the segment below, be be warned... you might cry!

When I was flipping through the interwebs last night after the show, I thought it was so cool when I stumbled on this photo of Meg chilling with Ben Affleck, who is also such a great humanitarian (aka giver-backer) and a Do Something Award Winner.

I'm so proud of Meg, Brooke, Marissa, and all the volunteers at Art Feeds. They truly do GOOD work; they truly help the children in need. I know what those kids went through on May 22nd, 2011, and I know how the Art Feeds gang came into the schools where the kids were and earned the right to help these kiddos. Ellie, of course, is among those children not only affected by the tornado, but also helped through Art Feeds. For that reason alone, I will always be in debt to Art Feeds and will always do whatever I'm able to help it succeed.

If you're looking for a non-profit to help, either financially or by volunteering, I know they would love your support. You can give here, or get involved here. Imagine it was YOUR child being helped. Wouldn't you want to do everything you can?
